This Week: Monster Sharks: Then and Now Sharks may very well be the most feared predators on Earth. Although most species are harmless to humans, it is the behavior of a notorious few, especially the white shark (more commonly known as the great white shark), that has given sharks their reputation as toothy monsters of the deep. The most successful marine predator, they attack their prey from behind and below, surprising them with a big bite. Much of the white shark's infamy can be attributed to the 1975 movie Jaws, featuring a relentless great white that terrorized the waters of a small seaside resort. In actuality, humans are more of a threat to sharks than vice versa, and many species have been placed on the endangered list.
